My brother didn’t tell me exactly what he wanted, so this was one of my “cold” runs, just laying down anything that came to mind. The idea was to show both King Piccolo & Piccolo-san, contrasted onto one another. I was trying to draw them in Akira Toriyama’s style, but was unsatisfied and decided to move on to Magneto, which I eventually finished.
After Magneto was finished, I came back to Piccolo. I started out alright, but I decided to go in a different direction at that point.
When I first got the Cintiq, I tried, unsuccessfully, for months actually draw on it using Sketchbook Pro. Up to this point, I only used it for digital coloring, that was, until Sunday morning, on the 16th at about 3:54 a.m. I started drawing something else on the Cintiq, and it turned out pretty good. So, I decided to try Piccolo on the Cintiq, and this is what I got.
At this point, I decided to go full digital, and even scraped the 1st digital try. This one was started a few hours before work, and turned out better than I thought it would.
This was basically what I finished before work earlier this week. I didn’t know where else to go from here, so I started doing cold runs again.
Around this time, I started to actually visualize a basic image of what the final piece would look like.
I opened both pictures in Paint.net and started playing with where I wanted to place Piccolo. This ended up changing later.
Don’t know why I decided to, but at some point, the Dragonballs became part of the piece. I saved them on a different layer in case they needed to be changed drastically later.
At this point, I have a solid visualization of the final piece, and decide to throw Shenron in here. This actually took less time than anything else, but I decided against it, since its probably the most generic Shenron pic ever.
This is where I started putting the final pieces together, and where the full body placement of Piccolo ultimately changed.
I hadn’t actually drawn another version of Shenron at this point, and did another cold run. The basic lines laid down where epically terrible, but once I started coloring it, I made the necessary corrections along the way.
There needed to be something in the background, and I decided on a few features from Kami’s lookout to cover that. Along the way, I threw that layer on top of everything else, just to see what it looked like, and got this. Not sure what it looks like to anyone else, but, to me, that’s an F’d up looking Pac-Man. Decided to save it before finalizing the picture.
And here is the finished product. All the separated pictures combined to create a final piece, and all done 100% digital with the Cintiq. This is a 1st for me, and I’ll hopefully be able to continue going full digital from this point on.
