A Mid Day's Work

I had been trying for awhile to do this, and finally got around to it, so, here it is.

00:00-00:56
The beginning of the video is a picture I used as a watermark for awhile now.  It became a bit of a trademark symbol, and I’d decided to redesign it.  I wanted to keep the symbols & numbers, but change everything else.  So, I traced over the original in Sketchbook Pro 2010.  At the time, I had Youtube.com playing in the background, listening to The Young Turks.  That’s what those clips are, pieces I tried to cut out, but missed em’.

00:56-01:16
Here, I had no idea where I was going.  I just started doing another “Cold Run”, trying to figure out where I was going with this.  None of the stuff I did up to this point I liked, and eventually hit my stride a few seconds later.

01:17-03:28
I got the basic outline the way I wanted, and started playing around with how it would look on the numbers & letters.  After got a little more of what I wanted, I started erasing lines to clean up more of the picture.

03:29-03:41
Here, I decided to use black, white, and gray instead of red, green, and yellow.  As I started laying down the colors, I noticed the need to close some of those open areas.

03:42-06:11
At this point, I started trying to modify the image some.  I added to the edges and put some grays in the blacks on the outer edge.  This turned out to be the finalized version, and I decided to move on from here.

06:12-09:08
Here’s where I started the main piece I wanted to do.  The main reference was from Will Smith’s Lost And Found 2005 album cover.  The references surrounding that picture are from random pictures of the Marta Train Station, Downtown Atlanta, and Underground Atlanta.  The basic idea was a picture of me, in the middle of the day, resting between meetings.  The bags is supposed to be a kind of messenger bag, used to carry my art portfolio, and supplies.

09:10-09:13
Right here, I started drawing the background.  The first thing I started on was a pillar for the body to lean on.

09:13-10:37
Here, I was trying to figure out which background to use.  I looked at three of the backgrounds I had available, and tried to go with those.  From there, I started doing a small sketch in the lower left corner of a possible background.  Once I got a grasp on what I wanted, I started trying to lay down some lines to follow later.

10:38-14:19
I started coloring the body at this point.  The background remained untouched beyond that point though, as I wanted to save that for later.  I closed Sketchbook Pro, and saved the info for later.

14:22-19:12
Opened Paint.net and loaded the saved picture to continue.  I use this software because it has tools that aren’t available in Sketchbook Pro, like the straight line tool.  The first thing I started was coloring was the pillar.  Afterwards, I started in on the floor.  I still needed to use the previous pictures for reference, and that’s what keeps popping up.  Next, I start on the left wall.  By the end, I just start to put the final touches on the wall & floor, before I save & switch back to Sketchbook Pro.

19:13-19:59
I wanted to isolate the body from the background, and so I tried to outline it in Sketchbook Pro.  Once I’ve got what I wanted, I save and go back to Paint.net.  Now, I start erasing the outline, and covering up the colors behind the pillar.  Saved and went back to Sketchbook Pro.

21:00-21:00
A piece I did of Piccolo from the Dragonball franchise.

21:27-23:40
Started putting furniture into the restaurant window.  At first, I put those lines down via the straight line tool.  Eventually, I went back and  drew lines down manually, in the window and farther in the background,  to follow later.  After all the lines are down, I filled all the colors, saved, and switched back to Sketchbook Pro.

23:41-33:08
Loaded up a photo of a Marta Train, and started sketching.  Finished up and loaded in Paint.net.  From here, I started laying down lines with the straight line tool.  After I finished the train, I went in and added a train station background.  Next, I loaded the train into the background, and resized it as necessary.  Afterwards, I touched up on a lot of the stuff that was left over.
